Birdswood a great day out in Cromford

Come and enjoy a peaceful journey along the Cromford Canal at Birdswood

How do you fancy spending a couple of hours meandering along the Cromford Canal in a narrowboat? Well, now’s your chance. Guaranteed to give you a sense of nostalgia once you’ve stepped on board the ‘Birdswood’. This feeling will be enhanced when you hear the commentary en route. You’ll learn about the history of the Birdswood and the Cromford Canal too.

The Birdswood is the trip boat belonging to the Friends of the Cromford Canal. The FCC is a registered charity so everyone you meet will be a volunteer. The trips on the narrowboat are just one of the many ways that the FCC raise money for the trust. All their revenue goes into their mission of restoring the Cromford Canal. It’s a huge project that will be running for a few years to come.

The Boat Trips

Choose the time you want. You can have a lie in and still arrive in time for the 11:00 departure. Although, you should arrive a good 15 minutes earlier to allow for boarding. However, you may prefer to have a spot of lunch and take the next boat which departs at 14:00.

The ‘regular powered boat trip’ starts from Cromford Wharf and runs the 1.2-mile journey through to Leawood Pumphouse. You can then take a short walk to take in the views of the Leawood Pumphouse and the Aqueduct over the River Derwent before setting back for your return journey. In this instance, the return journey is included in the ticket price.

There will be a choice of refreshments along the way and there’s even toilet on board. Further to this, Dogs are also very welcome. You’ll find more details provided when you click to book.

What a way to travel! The Birdswood is a 21-tonne 70-foot heritage narrowboat and the horse ‘Chelsea’ pulls it seemingly effortlessly. Additionally, she’ll pull it quicker than the powered trip.

You’ll travel along the same route as the Regular Powered Boat Trip. However, tickets for this trip are available with a choice of a single or return journey. When you go to book the horse-drawn trip you’ll notice that there are fewer trips available on the calendar. Consequently, you’d be well advised to book early so as not to miss a place.

You’ll still have time to take in the views before your return journey (if that’s your chosen option). Although, you may prefer to watch how the boat is turned around.

So you’ve planned a day with a large group (possibly a coach trip) and you want to take in a visit to Cromford Mill or take a stroll around Cromford village. Then what better way to add some relaxation time than by chartering the whole boat. The boat will take up to 40 people.  You can even have the commentary tailored to suit your requirements. If you would like to find out more then check out the website here. Alternatively, please call:  Tel: 07552 055455 (between 09:00 – 18:00).

  • When you visit the website to book your trip, the calendar will show green if your trip is available. If bookings have already been taken but there are still places left then the date will appear as brown and green. However, if your chosen date is showing completely brown then, unfortunately, it is fully booked.
  • Remember to always arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than the departure time to allow for boarding.
  • The volunteers at Birdswood are a friendly and helpful bunch so feel free to call them for more information.
