A leading rural arts festival – with art for everyone. Enjoy the work of more than 150 artists plus an inspiring programme of performances and events in this historic market town, right at the heart of the Derbyshire Dales.
Wirksworth Festival sees this beautiful Derbyshire market town transform into a gallery and performance venue for 2 weeks every September.
Art & Architecture Trail Weekend
Running for over 20 years, Wirksworth Festival has become one of the most vibrant showcases for contemporary art that you’ll find in rural England. During our trailblazing Art & Architecture Trail Weekend, the entire town becomes a gallery. With over 150 artists and designer-makers exhibiting and selling their work in more than 70 venues. In homes ranging from charming stone cottages to impressive Georgian townhouses, historic and quirky buildings, gardens, courtyards, shop windows and churches. It is the perfect way to meet artists, buy affordable art and take a look inside at some of Derbyshire’s most exquisite homes.
The Designer Makers Showcase is housed in two large venues bringing together some of the region’s best contemporary jewellery, ceramics, textiles, glassware and other crafts. Wirksworth Festival was one of the first places to put on an “art trail”. Now, one of its unique elements is our Curated Exhibition. We select and exhibit the work of established artists of national and international renown. They work alongside emerging artists to present exhibitions that are both ambitious and accessible. This is your chance to see some amazing contemporary visual art in a friendly and unusual, non-gallery setting.
Discover street entertainment and live music, workshops and family activities. Further, the town is full of lovely old pubs and independent cafés, grocers, bakeries and delis. You’ll also find a great range of street food on offer.
Trail Weekend tickets cost just £7 (under 18s free) for the whole weekend. This includes entry to all markets, venues and exhibitions plus an illustrated guide. The Trail Weekend is an unbeatable and fun way for everyone to enjoy contemporary art.
And the rest of the Festival…
For the remaining two weeks of the Festival, there’s a heady mixture of performance and fringe events. Including live music, dance, drama, film and family shows from world-class performers to the very best homegrown talent. And to bring the Festival to a close, our spectacular Community Event celebrates Wirksworth’s incredible community.
Town Hall Events with Learning Through Arts in partnership with Wirksworth Festival, this year presents a performance programme with the WOW Factor. It defies traditional boundaries, combines art forms. It also mixes old with new and whether your taste is music, theatre, dance, the spoken word – or a heady mixture of all of these. There’s something for everyone!
The Line Up
The Music kicks off with rising stars Hannah James and Grace Petrie. It follows through with evocative new work from Brian Boothby’s Firegazing and also sees the return of Kabantu (formerly Project Jam Sandwich). Then add the cool sounds of Soul Deep at our late night jazz event. The Moulettes bring us innovative music with back projection in “Preternatural” and celebrated reggae artist Macka.B. All warmed up by homegrown talent Skarambe, conclude the programme. Take part in Soul Voices workshops led by the dynamic Zee, and put on your dancing shoes for the DJ and dance club night.
The Dance features locally-based Secret Dance Club (fresh from 5-star reviews at Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe) with Memory Box. Followed by contemporary Indian performing arts with Sonia Sabri Dance Company, performing Dastaan with live music and projected film.
The Spoken Word celebrates the work of Mark Gwynne Jones with two shows; Psychicbread, with brand new work, and Wordworms, a show especially created for children. Adverse Camber returns with the Celtic legend in Dreaming the Night Field, and in Hillsiders we have our very own Wirksworth Radio Soap. At Inspired we welcome local artists from diverse art forms to share some of their work and ideas alongside a piece that has inspired and influenced them.
The Theatre features the wonderfully creative Northumberland Theatre Company with Barnaby Rudge, a Charles Dickens gothic tale of mystery and suspense, and the launch of the Wirksworth Youth Theatre at a workshop to which all young people are welcome.
For young people and families, as well as Wordworms, there’s a specifically aimed early evening slot at the DJ and Disco. The launch of Wirksworth Youth Theatre, activities in the Community Celebration and a day of art workshops and performances for the local Primary schools.
