Wirksworth is a town full of character with many nooks and crannies waiting to be explored. The annual Well Dressings and Carnival take place Spring Bank Holiday weekend and the Arts Festival is held in September. The town is surrounded by rolling countryside, easily accessible from Fox Lodge on foot, and makes a great base for exploring the Peak District. The High Peak Trail, the first abandoned railway line in the country to be turned into a recreational path, runs across the northern edge of the town and extends 17.5 miles deep into the Peak District National Park. Open to walkers and cyclists, bicycles can be hired at nearby Middleton Top Engine House alongside the trail, or you can bring your own. Bikes can be stored in the yard with room for up to 4 bikes in the cupboard under the stairs.
