Raise Your Voices is a community choir in Wirksworth Derbyshire. RYV was formed in 2010 purely for the joy of singing, and meets every Thursday from 7.15 – 9.15 at The Red Lion in Wirksworth Market Place. All are welcome, from novices to those more experienced; there are no auditions and the £4 weekly fee is on a pay as you go basis. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly so everyone has fun.
The songs are sung a cappella and arranged in three and four part harmonies for Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. They are a wonderfully diverse mix of genres from cultures and countries around the world.
Leader Lester Simpson, renowned singer, songwriter, performer, musician, broadcaster, is director/leader of RYV and four other choirs in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. He is also a popular leader of singing workshops around the country and performs professionally with his new quartet Narthen after almost 30 years with his acclaimed a cappella trio Coope Boyes Simpson.
RYV performs one or two themed concerts each year, often donating the proceeds to local and chosen charities, such as Aqua box, The Wirksworth Swimming Pool and the Wirksworth and District Music Lessons Fund, plus Médecins Sans Frontières and Help for Heroes. Every December RYV joins with other local choirs for Christmas carols and other mixed concerts.
RYV has a major claim to fame as being the only choir to perform in the BBC drama ‘Marvellous’ which won two BAFTAs, starring Toby Jones as Neil Baldwin whose life story was told and who also made a couple of appearances himself!
